2015-2016 Holy Trinity Condor Store
2nd Graders run Condor Store twice a month. They are in charge of setting up stock, delivering purchases to classrooms and counting proceeds periodically. Teams of 2nd graders assist Mrs. Signore at the selling tables during lunch. They still eat their lunch. 2nd graders assisting that week earn a 25 cent "paycheck" to purchase a pencil, book or other small item from store proceeds. Condor store sells used books, religious items and school supplies at very reasonable prices.
All proceeds that are not used to purchase new stock are donated twice a year to charities chosen by the 2nd grade class. The Condor Store has donated at over $1,000 to local, national and international charities since it began six years ago.
MARCH 2015 UPDATE: WE DONATED $150.00 FROM THIS YEAR'S PROCEEDS BY VOTING TO BUY A GOAT, A FRUIT TREE AND $50.00 OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO BE DONATED THROUGH FOOD FOR THE POOR's GIFT CATALOG: http://www.foodforthepoor.org/catalog/index.html
During MARCH IS READING MONTH, 2015, the theme was "Be Inspired to GROW Through Reading". Condor Store sold used books and was able to make a $250.00 donation through generous donations and sales to charity. We have wrapped up sales for the year and any other profits available will be sent to help the earthquake victims in Nepal.
2ND GRADERS HAVE DAILY HOMEWORK
Good homework habits are so important! 2nd and 3rd graders will be using daily planners to list homework they need to do. This will help prepare them for becoming much more independent in 4th grade.
MAD MINUTES
I send Mad Minutes home as twice-weekly homework in addition to other math homework. I would like you to be directly involved in the process so you can help your child with flashcards when you see him/her stagnating or get an extra workbook or math computer activity to do. You will know exactly which facts are tripping up your child and can work on those. I will record your child’s Mad Minute homework score at school, return it, and will send home the same type for mastery. More challenging Mad Minutes will go home as your child progresses. STUDENTS WILL AIM FOR PROFICIENCY, NOT PERFECTION. THEY WILL SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE 26/30 PROBLEMS IN 1 1/2 MINUTES WHICH IS ABOUT 3 1/2 SEC. PER PROBLEM. Each 2nd grader should have all basic addition and subtraction facts up to 20 memorized by the end of February, hopefully, and the end of the year at the latest. Once these facts are mastered they will move on to basic multiplication up to 5 X 5 and will go further if they are able, however those are the required skills for 2nd graders by the end of the year. |
Behavior Expectations
Students work on their behavior individually, in their teams, and as a whole class.

Technology in our Classroom - 2015/2016 - Check out our Classroom Wiki for websites we are using for learning!
We have weekly and even daily opportunities to participate with the E-Beam whiteboard technology and the overhead document camera. This year I will try to feature many of the website links that we are interacting with for you to enjoy and visit from home. Students have brought headphones to school to use with our school Ipads. We are using them twice weekly to practice individualized skills on our MobyMax school account. We also have two computers and another IPad in the classroom for additional learning games as a center. The document camera when doing guided reading lessons is very helpful for the students. By using another copy of their textbook and the document camera we can interact with the page they are working on right on the whiteboard. This is especially helpful as they are learning how to fill out charts and answer comprehension questions related to the reading text. Instead of just listening to where they should be putting information or looking at answers listed on a plain white board, they can see exactly where their words go in their textbooks. This is especially helpful for visual learners. |
